Reverend Peter Melvin
submitted by Darlene Hinton

Peter Melvin was born in 1824 in Tennessee (probably Wilson County), married Mary Jackson in Wilson County April 7, 1844.  He migrated to Pope County, Illinois around 1868 and to Livingston County, Kentucky a bit later.  He died there in June of 1899. (see copy of clipping from an 1899 Kentucky newspaper below).

( Alice Lee Hill and I ((great great grandaughters of Peter Melvin)) are grateful for new information on the Wilson County years provided by David Hagar and Hilda Hagar Barnes. Ms Barnes has written a history of New Hope Baptist Church in Hermitage)

We have, thus, learned that Peter Melvin was a founding member of New Hope Baptist Church in 1846 and ordained to preach there in 1855. He received a letter of dismissal when he departed for Illinois in 1868.

It is thought by my Kentucky cousin, Alice Lee Hill, (who possesses the original of Peter's photo) that some other members of the JACKSON and MELVIN families migrated to Illinois and Kentucky with Peter and his family. Possibly the migration route will be of interest to others researching these names in Wilson County.
