Asians
Immigrants from
Asia make up a significant portion of Trinidad's
population. People of Indian
descent comprise over 40% of the population. The
Chinese,
while not so numerous, have also had a significant
impact on Trinidadian society. It is interesting to
note that many of these immigrants arrived as
indentured servants, but through hard work they
were able to become a significant economic and
political force in the island.
Another
noteworthy group of immigrants from Asia are those
from Greater
Syria.
These people came to the West Indies while fleeing
religious persecution, and found a place of
opportunity and safety in Trinidad.
