Research
In this section, we organize and list the primary resources available to researchers, and provide as much information as we can about how they can be accessed. Your input is essential to making this list as comprehensive as possible, so please, chip in.

Research in...

The sources are organized into primary sources, such as civil records, and secondary sources, like books and newspapers. We also try to provide information on what repositories of information have information for Trinidad and Tobago genealogy. These include libraries and government archives.

As you may find, researching your ancestors in Trinidad and Tobago is more difficult that some of the other islands of the West Indies. Trinidad has been reluctant to allow any microfilming of their records, unlike islands like Barbados, so you will find almost nothing through organizations like the Church of Latter Day Saints. As one of the researchers helping me with this site has pointed out, "the top priority for T&T Genealogy is the protection of records in Trinidad & Tobago by archival-quality microfilming. Encouraging access, without this, may lead to the permanent loss of much of Trinidad and Tobago's untold history". We now have an initiative going to encourage the T&T government to begin preserving this history.

Individuals doing paid research in Trinidad are virtually non-existent. If you happen to live in England, you will have easier access to old newpapers, almanacs, and Colonial Office Records. If you live in the US these records will be difficult to come by. Eventually, making a trip to Trinidad will be necessary. Unless of course, you can get help from other researchers, and that is where sites like this come in. The more information we share, the easier it will become for everyone, so don't be stingy!
