Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (1861-1865) was organized on May 30, 1885. Headquarters and Museum (which is open to the public) are located in Springfield, IL. DUV is a fraternally chartered, genealogical, historical, educational and patriotic organization open to women of lineal descent from an honorably discharged Union Veteran of the Civil War. Minimum age is 8 years of age. Local tents are spread throughout the United States.
Latha Jane Boyd Tent #1, the first tent in Texas was chartered in Arlington, Tx in 1989. Members are from all over the state of Texas. We participate in local patriotic and memorial services, Massing of Colors on Veteran's Day in Fort Worth, and the 4th of July parade in Arlington, TX. We have participated in many activities with our sister organization, United Daughters of the Confederacy. We maintain almost 100 graves and honor those veterans buried in the G.A.R. lot in Greenwood Cemetery in Dallas, TX. We are compiling a book of Union Civil War Veterans buried in the state of Texas to be published and placed in major libraries in the state of Texas. We have already published a book of members's Union soldiers and Pedigree charts for each member, and this has been placed in major libraries in Texas.
**NEW TENT PROJECTS**
.....We are compiling a supplement to our original book titled "Union Veterans of the Civil War Buried in the State of Texas". This will be an ongoing project by member, Susan Pena who will be compiling this information. If you find the name of ANY Union Veteran that is buried in Texas, that was not already included in our original book, she will be happy to add that information to the ongoing project. There are copies of our first book in most of the major libraries throughout Texas. To send information to Susan Pena, please send it to sweetsue63@sbcglobal.net
.....Our second project is that we are now selling copies of our original book titled "Union Veterans of the Civil War Buried in the State of Texas". That book was originally compiled by Kathy Wells and was printed in 1998. Barbara Aman converted the book into Adobe format and it is now available on either CD or DVD, whichever you prefer. To order a copy please send a check made out to DUV for $10.00 which covers the CD/DVD and the cost of postage. Send to Susan Pena, 407 Jennifer Lane, Arlington, Tx 76002, or e-mail her at sweetsue63@sbcglobal.net
if you have any questions. Be sure to send her your address along with the check.

The Last Widow of a Union Army Veteran Dies at Age 93
Gertrude Janeway, the last surviving Union Army widow (of
veteran John Janeway, 14th IlIinois Cavalry) and reportedly an Honorary
member of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War died on Jan 17th
at age 93.
Mrs. Janeway who lived her whole life in Blaine Tennessee
about 30 miles north of Knoxville, was born 44 years after the Civil War
ended.
Her husband (who enlisted under the name John January) was a
19-year-old Grainger County. Tennessee farm boy who ran away to enlist in
1864 after being encouraged by a group of Union horse soldiers that he met
on his way to a Blount County grist mill. She said her husband rarely spoke
about the war, when interviewed.
The 17 year-old young woman married Mr. Janeway in 1927 when
he was 81. He died in 1937 at age 91. She was to be buried near her
husband's slender military tombstone at tiny New Corinth Church cemetery.
