Aransas City

The first community in Aransas County was established at Live Oak Point at the tip of Live Oak Peninsula near the channel to Copano Bay. Aransas City was incorporated on January 28, 1839 with James Power as its mayor. The residents of Aransas City included the following:

City of Lamar

James Byrne organized the City of Lamar across Copano Bay. He named it after the President of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar. In 1839, twenty families lived in Lamar. Some of the early inhabitants were:

San Jose/St. Joseph Island

San Jose Island lies between the Gulf of Mexico and the rest of Aransas County. The first village was called Aransas and later Saint Joseph. Its earliest inhabitants were "seafaring men", including pirates, and privateers. The families who lived on the island included:

First Citizens of Rockport, Aransas Co., TX

The County seat of Refugio County was transferred to Rockport on March 15, 1871, and Rockport was elevated from town to city on May 26 1871. On September 18, 1871, the Texas Legislature approved the creation of Aransas from Refugio County, with Rockport as its county seat. The citizens of Rockport, Fulton and Lamar who signed the petition in 1871 for Rockport to be made the county seat were:
