Armstrong County History
Armstrong county was created from Bexar
County in 1976 and organized in 1890.
It was named for a pioneer family named Armstrong.
The countyseat was first called Armstrong City, but Texas already
had a town named Armstrong.
It was changed to Claude by Claude Ayers and engineer for the FW&DC
Railroad. who suggested it
to the town when they told him there was no name. Ayers is buried in
the County.
The Palo Duro Canyon extends through Armstrong County where, along with
Hall, Randall, Briscoe, Swisher,
and Donley counties, was the home of the JA
Ranch, established in 1876 by John Adair in partnership
with Charles Goodnight, who was its manager.
