Verdes H. Ueckert, D.V.M. of Columbus passed away September 5, 2004 at Kindred Hospital in the Houston Medical Center, in Houston. He was born October 17, 1921 on the Ueckert family land near Bellville. He graduated from Bellville High School and attended Texas A&M until serving as a Naval aviator during World War II. In 1944 he married Rosanna Struss of Columbus. He graduated from Texas A & M as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He later received a Masters in Public Health from Tulane Medical School. He enjoyed a 40 year career in public health. First in Phoenix, Arizona and the last 28 years as Deputy Health Officer for the Health District in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was a member of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, Blue Bonnet Tri-County Veterinary Society, Texas A&M Former Students Association, National Sanitarians Association, American Public Health Association, and was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. He retired in 1993 and returned to Texas, living in Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Tony Zajicek Ueckert; son, Douglas Ueckert; daughter-in-law, Nikki Ueckert, and grandson Nickolus Ueckert. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Rosanna Struss Ueckert; son, and wife William and Carol Ueckert of Woodland, California; son, Edwin Ueckert of Bellville; grandson, Paul Ueckert of Sacramento, California; and grandchildren, Stacy and Alex Ueckert of Waco, and Tess and Adam Schermerhorn of Woodland, California; and brother, Otis Ueckert of Bellville, Texas. Private graveside services were held on September 9th at the Ueckert Family cemetery near Bellville with the Rev. Walt Glasscock officiating under the direction of Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus.
