James Archie Gray was born January 14, 1907 in Lexington, Texas to parents Ace and Willie Jane Hollinghead Gray. A lifelong resident of Austin County, Texas, Archie farmed and ranched most of his life and had also been employed as a prison guard. Known as the "Watermelon King," he enjoyed raising the biggest watermelons around. And there was nothing he liked better than raising a big garden and sharing the fruits of his labors with his family and friends. He also loved deer hunting and trapping raccoons. Gray passed away Thursday, March 3, 2005 in Bellville, Texas at the age of 98. He is survived by his daughter: Ethel Gray Smith; and 3 granchildren; Patsy Krupala Huffman and her husband, Francis, Paul Krupala, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, and James Krupala; all of Bellville. He is also survived by his Great Grandchildren; and many other dear friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Gray, daughter, Mary Ruth Gray, brothers, Andrew and Arthur Gray, and his sisters, Edith Langham, Ruby Phinney and Louise Phelps. Funeral Service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2005 at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Bellville with the Reverend Jeff English officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Knoll Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Krupala, Paul Krupala, Jr., Bill Langham, James Langham, Ronnie Muery and Francis Huffman. Honorary pallbearers were Chris Krupala, Levi Krupala, Chase Huffman, Randall Huffman, Scott Huffman, Jack Clark and Sam Clark. In lieu of usual rememberances, Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the Bellville Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home.
