Helen Karonika was born on January 9, 1920 in Roans Prairie, TX. She was the second of eight children born to Lee and Lonnie (Fridye) Borski.
On October 21, 1937 she was united in marriage with John Wallace Karonika. She and John moved to Houston after the birth of her sons, John and Thomas. In January of 2000, she moved to Shelby to live with her son John and daughter in law Frances.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Industry, TX. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends (especially her close friend Veronica, who brought her Holy Communion every week), playing dominos with friends, a good game of baseball, reading the Navasota Examiner, daily Bible readings and the church bulletins, which were sent to her by a friend, after she could no longer attend mass.
In September of 2004, she suffered a stroke during surgery and returned home to Shelby, where her son and daughter in law cared for her until her death.
Helen went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 14, 2005.
Her parents, her brothers, Lee and Ted Borski, her husband for over 50 years, John, and her youngest son Thomas precede her in death.
She is survived by her son John Karonika and his wife Frances of Shelby, TX; her daughter in law, Judy Karonika of Sugarland, TX; sister Maggie Wagner of Conroe, TX, sister Rosie Wagner of Houston, TX, sister Veronica Borski of Houston, TX, sister Tina Young of Ft. Mill, SC., and sister Liz and her husband Bobby Hudson of Hearne, TX; granddaughter Joyce and her husband Denny Janosky of Bellville, TX, granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Lee Kominczak, Jr of College Station, TX, grandson Mark Karonika of Shelby, TX, grandson Adam Karonika and grandson Jack Karonika, both of Sugarland; great-granddaughters, Delaney Janosky of Bellville and Abigail Kominczak of College Station, TX and many beloved extended family members.
A Rosary will be held, Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at the Zaskoda Chapel in Industry, TX. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Industry. A Graveside Service will also be held on Thursday at 3 PM at Forrest Park Cemetery (Gethsemani Terrace) on Westheimer in Houston, TX.
Funeral Services are under the direction of Koenig-Strickland Funeral Home in LaGrange, TX.
In lieu of flowers, please make remembrances to the Immaculate Conception Church in Industry, TX.
