Funeral services for Jewel Kirk, 95, of Sealy, were held Monday, June 6 at 11 a.m. at Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel in Sealy with Mr. Erwin Boyle officiating. Graveside services were held on Thursday, June 9 at 10 a.m. at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah. Born in Paducah, Jewel was the daughter of Leslie Marion and Epsie Vester (Downing) Applegate. She was raised and attended school in Paducah. Jewel was baptized at First Baptist Church in Paducah. On April 19, 1930 the former Miss Jewel Applegate was joined in marriage to Mr. William G. (Bill) Kirk in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Jewel lived in Paducah for 43 years and was a very active member of Missionary Baptist Church in Paducah. She has resided in Sealy for the last seven years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sealy. Jewel Kirk died Saturday, June 4, in Katy.
She is survived by her daughters: Ann Simmons and husband Jack of Sealy; Sherry Lavon Jones and husband Ray of Trophy Club, TX; and Jackey Raye Wygal and husband Tony of Hector, Arkansas; sister: Cora Ladell Wiggins of Farmersville; grandchildren and spouses: Theresa and Bill Nabours; Kathy and Steve Simpson; Pam and Daniel Killins; Bobby and Holly Strahan; Judy and Mike Cary; Kirk and Lisa Strahan; Dianna and Vince Lombardi; Sandra Simmons, Suzann and Terry Perrault; Dawn Simmons; Cheri Simpson; and Roy and Carol Wygal; 24 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents: Leslie and Epsie Applegate; husband, William G. Kirk; son William G. Kirk; brothers, Nonnie Marion "Dick" Applegate, James Thomas "J.T." Applegate, Theodore "Ted" Applegate; and sister, Gladys Pearl Williams. Funeral services are under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels.
