Leona (Warmke) Minton, age 90, of Bleiblerville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005 at her residence. Born July 20, 1915 in Bleiblerville, Leona (affectionately known as Dickie) was the daughter of Herman and Erna (Eben) Warmke. She was baptized on Oct. 10, 1915, and confirmed on May 19, 1929 at the Welcome Lutheran Church. She attended the Victoria School in Bleiblerville. On Nov. 29, 1939, she was united in marriage with Gilbert Minton at the Welcome Lutheran Church. The Mintons resided on the Warmke farm where they produced cotton, corn, cattle, broilers and swine. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage until Gilbert's death on Dec. 24, 2004. Leona was active in several organizations. She was a member of Texas Extension Education Club for over 65 years where she held various offices. She was a member of the Christian Sisters of the Nelsonville Brethren Church. Leona was a sponsor of the Brethren Youth Fellowship and was involved in the Adult Sunday School classes. She also received Red Cross training during the Secord World War and participated in the SPJST Bleiblerville/Nelsonville Lodge. She was a member and supporter of the Bleiblerville Volunteer Fire Department. Leona was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time outside in her garden, flowerbeds and fishing. Her talents of cooking, canning and baking have been enjoyed by the residents of Bleiblerville for many years. Leona enjoyed exhibiting items at the Austin County Fair and the Austin County Pecan Show. She also looked forward to playing cards, dominos and quilting with her friends. She will be remembered for her love of nature and knowledge of plants and flowers. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, her parents and sisters, Esther and Ruby. Leona is held in loving memory by her daughter, Carolyn and husband, James Balke of Bleiblerville, granddaughters, Kelly Balke of Waco and Susan Balke of Houston, and niece, Lorraine Teufel, of Brenham. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005 at 10 a.m. at Nelsonville Brethren Church with the Rev. Michael Groseclose officiating. Burial followed in National Cemetery. Pallbearers were Steve Doty, Stanley Jurchak, Kermit Kolwes, Kenneth Lehmann, Delbert Schramm, O.B. Shelburne and Randall Teufel. Honorary pallbearers included Mrs. Harriette Allen, Casper Balke, Mrs. Cheryl Buenger, Bill Davis, Carden Jenkins, Herbert Schovajsa, Alvin Schultz, Sr and Kermit Teufel. Memorials may be made to the Christian Sisters of Nelsonville Brethren Church at 352 Nelsonville Church Road, Bellville, Texas 77418.
