Spencer John was born in Porterville, Calif. to John Mulnix and Addie Swan Spencer on Sept. 10, 1921 and passed away at Plantation Health Care in Lake Jackson, Texas on Oct. 14, 2005 at the age of 84. John had been a resident of the Plantation Villas Retirement Community since the death of his loving wife Lillian Darling Spencer on Sept. 29, 2000. He is survived by three children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; son Stuart Spencer and his wife Patti, their children, Allison and husband Jason Ellison, Michael and Ashley of Cypress; daughter Laurie Poland and husband John their children, Kevin and wife Trina, and Joseph of Sweeny and son John A. Spencer his wife Rae, their children, John (Travis) and Tyler of Cypress. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his brothers Duncan and Albert, sister Clara and grandson, Mathew Poland. John grew up in California and graduated from Hollywood High School excelling in physics and chemistry. He graduated from The California Institute of Technology in 1943 with a degree in Applied Chemistry and married his wife Lillian on April 29, 1944 in Long Beach, Calif. During his lifetime John worked as an Associate Professor of Petroleum Engineering at The University of Texas, Director of Natural Gas Activities for Continental Oil Company, and as a process engineer for Bechtel Engineering Co. These jobs gave him the opportunity to travel worldwide before he retired in 1982. During retirement he and Lillian lived in the Texas towns of Cat Spring and Bellville before residing in Lake Jackson. John and Lillian were wonderful parents were married for over 50 years. He was very active as a Boy Scout Leader with his sons and also enjoyed woodworking. In retirement he enjoyed building telescopes and was an avid reader. His last years were at Plantation Villas where he formed wonderful caring friendships thanks to the director Shelly and her staff. A private graveside service for family and close friends will be held Oct. 19, 2005 at Angleton Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to wife Lillian and near his grandson Matthew. Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons, Jason, Michael, Kevin, Joseph, Travis and Tyler.
