Laas Robert Francis "Bob" Laas was born June 3, 1923 in Bellville, the son of Ernest Grover and Erna E. Westerman Laas. He grew up and attended school in Cedar Bayou graduating from Cedar Bayou High School. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. As a Side Gunner, Bob flew 30 daylight missions in a B-24 over Berlin. After his honorable discharge in 1945, Bob earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Houston. He taught school at Cullen Junior High and Thomas Junior High in Houston, and at Bellville High School. He was united in marriage with Gladys Pierce in 1959 in Houston. They have made their home in Bellville and have been members of the Bellville Church of Christ. An avid outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of Austin County Crimestoppers, the Bellville Lions Club and the Bellville VFW Post #6522. He passed away suddenly Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006 in Bellville at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Gladys Pierce Laas of Bellville; children Dan Laas and his wife, Jessica, of Bellville, Don Laas of Katy and Sherry Laas Broberg and her husband, Steve, of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren Matthew Laas, Kyle Laas, Kate and Michael Marguglio, Laura and Lee Buckley and Michelle Laas; great grandchildren Alex Martinez and Haley Laas; brother Everette Laas and his wife, Annie, of Conroe; sister-in-law Joyce Pierce of Houston; nephews Alan Laas and Eric Laas; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Ernst Laas. Funeral Service was 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006 at Bellville Church of Christ with Brother Charles Wilson, officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Dr. Christophe Gay, Matt Laas, Kyle Laas, Joe Blummel, John Harris and Judge Rick Yancey. Honorary Pallbearers include Bob's brothers in Christ from the Bellville Church of Christ and members of the Bellville VFW Post #6522. Interment was in Oak Knoll Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.
