La Marque - Mike Velasquez, 87 of La Marque, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007 at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center in Webster, Texas. Mr. Velasquez was born September 29, 1919 in Houston, Texas, the son of Nicholas and Refugio Hernandez Velasquez. Mike was a veteran of the World War II serving in the United States Army. He served as member of rifle squad in patrols to secure information regarding enemy activity. And also served as demolitions man in the destruction of enemy pill boxes. Mike returned home to work for the AT & SF Railroad where he was a brakeman and conductor. He was a member of the United Transportation Union. Mike was a resident of La Marque for the past 48 years. He was a very faithful person and loved his church, First Baptist Church of La Marque, and he was an avid gardener. Mike is preceded in death by his wife, Guadalupe Velasquez; his brothers, Emilio, Benjamin and Ascension; his sister Soledad Acebo. Mike is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Rose Marie and James Turner of Ganado, TX., Nickie and Clifford Cunningham of El Lago, TX. and Mickie Grant of Deer Park, TX; four grandchildren, Michael Grant, Michelle Diefenbach, Terilyn Zuteck and Jeff Cunningham; four great grandchildren, Elizabeth Cunningham, Cole Zuteck, Abigail Grant and Lucy Cunningham. Visitation was Monday, August 20, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. at the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque. Funeral Service was 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at the First Baptist Church of La Marque, with Pastor David Smith, officiating. A graveside service was at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville, under the direction of the James Crowder Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Cliff Cunningham, Jeff Cunningham, Izaak Diefenbach, Michael Grant, James Turner and Mark Zuteck.
