One of, if not the oldest resident of Austin County, Hattie Ludwig Vornkahl, died Friday, July 27, 2007, in Colonial Belle Nursing Home. She was 105. Born December 14, 1901, in Peters Community, Austin County, Texas, before the first flight of the airplane by the Wright Brothers, she is the daughter of Joseph and Theresa Sonsel Ludwig. Vornkahl grew up and attended the Hacienda Schools in the Peters Community. She married Walter Vornkahl on August 3, 1921 and they made their home in Millheim until the late 1940s when they moved to Bellville. Hattie and Walter were members of the Bellville United Methodist Church. Together they owned and operated a cotton gin in Millheim. They also had a dairy and sold cream and butter. Walter preceded Hattie in death on January 25, 1966. Hattie has made her home at Colonial Belle for a number of years where both she and her daughter, Ruby, were active room mates. Ruby preceded Hattie in death on March 19, 2007. Hattie enjoyed visiting, watching television and her meal time. She is survived by her sister in law: Ora Dell Ludwig of Brenham; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter and four sisters: Edna Fisher, Louella Frels, Lilly Balke and Laura Schubert; and one brother, Edwin Ludwig. Visitation was held Sunday, July 29, 2007 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Schmidt Funeral home. Services were conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, July 30, 2007 at Bellville United Methodist Church with the Rev.
