Memorial services for Carlos Deere, 81, of Bellville, were held Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008 at 2 p.m. from Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Olsen,
Carlos was born the son of Jack and Allie (Smotherman) Deere in Emhouse, Texas.
He graduated from Bellville High School and went on to the University of Texas in Austin where he graduated with a degree in geology. Shortly after college Carlos
enlisted in the Air Corp where he spent time in Manila, Korea and the Philippines.
Following his military service, Carlos launched his career in the oil and gas business as in independent geologist where he worked for many years. Later in his
career Carlos moved into a more fun environment where he worked for KWHI Radio in Brenham as a sportscaster. During his tenure with KWHI he broadcast 88 sporting
Following this position he became sports writer for the Brenham Banner Press. Being a “sports nut” (as he would say) he spent 14 enjoyable years in this
In his spare time Carlos enjoyed golf, tennis and writing short novels. He even worked on a script for a play. One of his novels was somewhat of an autobiography
and was published as a paperback which is available locally.
Throughout his life Carlos enjoyed music (playing the trumpet in his earlier years) and especially loved the “big band sounds” of such greats as Harry James.
He never lost his love or enthusiasm for the University of Texas Longhorns!
Carlos is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Deere.
He is survived by his nephew Craig Deere of Austin; niece, Charlotte Deere of Brenham and his sister in law, Verna Lois Deere of Bellville.
