Bellville Times

Harold Roger Luhn, 52, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at his home in Bellville surrounded by his family.

He was born June 10, 1956, in Bellville. The son of Roger and Florence (Koehn) Luhn, he grew up and attended school in Bellville, graduating from Bellville High School in 1974.

Even then, Harold had a knack for agriculture. He received the State Lone Star FFA degree in 1973.  Then in 1975, he received the American FFA Degree - the highest degree you can earn as an FFA member.

On April 16, 1977, Harold married Rosie Reznicek in Sealy and together they made their home in Bellville where they have been active in community affairs.

The Austin County Fair runs deep in the Luhn blood line.  Before he was even a year old, Harold rode on horseback in his first Austin County Fair parade with his mom and dad.  Growing up, he exhibited livestock at the fair. Following in his father’s footsteps, Harold was elected to the Austin County Fair Board of Directors in 1989 and served on the Executive Committee from 1994 - 1997.

In 2003, Harold was elected President of the Austin County Fair and served a 3-year term.  He was currently serving as an advisory director on the board.

A farmer and rancher, Harold was a founding member, Past President and director of the Bellville FFA Alumni. For the past 10 years, he served on the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Go Texan Contest Committee and was serving as Vice Chairman of that committee. Harold was also a former director of the Austin County Farm Bureau and the Farm Service Agency.

In 2006, he was awarded the Volunteer of the Year from the Texas Association of Fairs and Events and was selected as the Lions Club Citizen of the Year for 2007.

An avid supporter of the youth of Austin County, Harold was selected to serve as the Parade Marshal for the 81st Annual Austin County Fair Parade whose theme was “Great American Heroes.”

He and Rosie have been active members of their church, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bellville, where Harold was also a member of the Holy Name Society.

A devoted husband and father, Harold treasured the time he was able to spend with his children, and adored his two granddaughters, Mary and Amy.  He was a fan of polka music, and he enjoyed restoring and collecting antique tractors.
