Norma Louise (Leonard) Higgins was born Sep. 28, 1936, in Galveston, the daughter of George and
Louise (McElyea) Leonard. She grew up and attended school in Galveston.
Norma married Frank Higgins on Feb. 14, 1953, in Galveston.
They made their home in Galveston until 1964, when they moved to Bellville. Frank preceded Norma in
death May 27, 2001.
A member of the First Baptist Church in Bellville, Norma was an active member and Past Worthy
Matron of the Bellville Chapter #611, Order of the Eastern Star having served in various capacities.
She was an avid Bellville Brahma football fan and enjoyed following their games. She was a devoted
mother and grandmother who treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren.
She made an awesome crab gumbo, and was an avid reader. Norma also enjoyed taking trips to Coshatte
and shopping. She also had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing with the Austin County Civic Chorale.
She passed away suddenly in a Houston hospital after a brief illness. She was 72 years old.
Norma is survived by her children: Mary Beth Karasek and her husband, Jerry of Texas City, and
Joseph Higgins and Karin Signer of Plano; grandchildren: J.J. and Cari Karasek of Bellville, Jaime and Brandon Terry, also of Bellville, Ashley Schulz of Austin,
LTS Courtney and James Killian of Wichita Falls, Kaci Higgins and Kori Higgins of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; and great grandchildren: Trystan Karasek, Alacia Karasek
Sauser, Cody Beard, Jacob Bland, Colin Karasek, and Madison Terry. She is also survived by her brothers: Mike Leonard and his wife, Tassie of Dickinson, John
Leonard and his wife, Tammy, of Santa Fe, and Jim Leonard of Galveston; and many other dear friends and relatives.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her daughter, Rosemarie “Peanut”
Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009 at Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.
The funeral service was at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Bellville
with Pastor Steve Olsen, officiating.
Intermet was at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery in Bellville.
Pallbearers were J.J. Karasek, Billy Armstrong, Brandon Terry, Joey Higgins, Mike Leonard, and John
