Leland Edward Maeckel was born April 23, 1931, on the family farm in Bleiblerville, Texas, the son of Ed. W. and
Mathilde Kudlacek Maeckel. He grew up and attended the Victoria School and graduated from Bellville High School in 1950. After high school, Leland enlisted in the
United States Army. He served in the 24th Division in Puson, Korea, from August 1952 to July 1954.
A lifelong Brethren, he was baptized on June 7, 1931,at the Industry Brethren Church by Pastor F. J. Kostohryz.
He was confirmed on September 7, 1947, at the Nelsonville Brethren Church by Reverend Josef A. Barton. One of the highlights of his later years was the service he
gave to Industry Brethren Church as Vice President of the Board of Elders and caretaker of the church grounds. Lelandís career was with the Texas Department of
Transportation where he worked over 25 years. He received numerous TXDOT awards for safe driving. Upon retiring from the highway department, Leland ranched for
the remainder of his life. He also worked part-time for Schovasjsa Catering.
Leland liked to hunt, fish and play dominoes and cards with his friends. He was loved by many and he loved many.
Leland passed away on the family farm on July 6, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother,
Marvin Maeckel. Leland is survived by his sisters, Edith Betts and Lorene Brown, both of College Station, and his sister-in-law, Shirley Maeckel of Bellville. He
is also survived by his niece, Beverly Ward and her husband, Jerry, of Colleyville, Texas and nephew, Bill Betts and his wife, Paula, of Brenham and their
Visitation took place on Wednesday, July 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.
The funeral service was at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, July 9 at the Industry Brethren Church with Pastor Milton Maly
Interment was at Industry Brethren Church Cemetery in Industry.
Pallbearers were Darrell Krueger, Bryon Balke, Alvin Schulz, Jr., Boyd Ueckert, Calvin Petrusek, Tim Janish, and
Honorary Pallbearers were Billie Schovajsa, Pat Mikeska, and Herbert Schovajsa.
