Dorothy Jane Shaw Mahon went to be with the Lord Aug. 26, 2009.
She was born April 9, 1923, in San Antonio to Herman M. and Sarah Elizabeth Stickney Shaw.
Dot and her twin brother, Eugene Stewart Shaw and older brother, James Herman Shaw, often recalled
fond memories of playing with cousins and making new friends living in San Antonio, Harlingen, and Dilley.
After graduating from Dilley High School, she attended the Medical and Surgical Memorial Hospital
School of Nursing in San Antonio, where she received a degree in Nursing and became a registered nurse. She “loved hospital nursing, especially emergency
room, surgery and obstetrics.”
On Aug. 10, 1946, she married her grade school sweetheart, Ernest Clifton Mahon, Jr., in
After marrying, they moved to Kingsville where she worked for Texas A&I University as the
school nurse. While there, she helped establish the College Infirmary.
Throughout married life, she worked primarily as a school nurse. But most importantly, she
always provided her family with a hot cooked meal, and clean, freshly ironed clothes.
She led by her Christian example as well as her desire to encourage others.
Her father was a great inspiration over her life and guided her to “be honest, do the very best
you can, and never let anything stop you from trying to be the best you can be.”
Lovingly known by her family and friends as Dee-Dot, she was always the life of the party and
the center of the family. She loved going dancing with Ernie, and they often attended dances throughout south Texas.
Dee-Dot loved eating at Galileo’s and visiting with friends. Some of her most treasured
memories were spending time at the family farm.
A special thank you should go to the owners and staff of the Arbors in Bellville for making her
final years so safe and enjoyable, as well as her caregivers Shirlean, Merlean, Rena and Sally.
