Alice A. Gilson Reed was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Washington, DC, the daughter of James A. and Amanda B. Smith
She grew up in Washington and was employed by the Federal Government.
A Catholic by faith, Alice was united in marriage to J. Warren McCarthy, on July 4, 1946.
They became parents of two daughters, Anne and Mary.
Alice and Warren raised their daughters in Greenbelt, Md.
Warren passed away on Oct. 26, 1971, and Alice remarried on April 14, 1973, to Thomas Reed. Thomas preceded her
in death on Sept. 3, 1988.
Alice went on to retire from the United States Department of Agriculture in 1975, after many years of service as
a soil survey clerk.
She passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the age of 96.
She is survived by her daughters; Anne L. Davis and her husband, Michael, of Bellville and Mary A, Carper and her
husband, Richard, of Corvallis, Ore.; grandchildren: Helen Bohler and Terry Meers, of Dallas, Cecilia Rodriguez and her husband, John, of Somerville, Suzanne
Limerick and her husband, Greg, of Albany, Ore. and Kathleen Steele and her husband, Mark, of Lacombe, Ore. She is also survived by her 10 great grandchildren, 5
great-great grandchildren and the loving family of Thomas Reed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, 2 brothers, James J. Gilson and John A. Gilson.
Graveside will be 2 p.m., Friday, June 26, 2009 at Culpeper National Cemetery in Culpeper, Va.
