Donald Edwin Marteeny, age 88, died on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at his home in Bellville.
He was born in Berwick, Pennsylvania on August 22, 1921 to Frank and Grace Van Houten Marteeny. He was the
youngest of six children, including sisters Marjorie, Kate, and Dorothy, and brothers, Clem and Barney. At the death of his parents at an early age, he was raised
by his sisters in Pennsylvania and New York.
He graduated from Berwick High School, Berwick, Pa. in 1939 and worked as a bank teller after graduation.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corp on February 2, 1942 and served as Technical Sergeant in the 112th squadron. He
was stationed in Algeria, Italy, and England during the Air Offensive for Tunisia, Sicily, Naples and Southern France.
On of the same day he enlisted in the Army, he married the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Grace Preston
In 1953 Donald joined ACF Industries where he began a 30 year career leading to Plant Manager for the rail car
manufacturing operations in Huntington, WV. and St. Lois MO. He retired in 1983.
Donald and Grace made their home in Berwick PA. and Huntington WV. where they raised their four sons, Donald Jr.,
John, Chris, and Richard. They enjoyed family gatherings with their brothers and sisters and their families. Donald was active in community charities, worked in
United Way campaigns and was an Elder and Deacon at Highlawn Presbyterian Church in Huntington.
He moved to Bellville in 2007, and lived with Chris and Kathy Marteeny. He continued his lifelong faith as a
Presbyterian and joined Brenham Presbyterian Church. He especially enjoyed the fellowship of Bible Study and lunches with the XYZ group. He loved the Church and
deeply appreciated the love and support of its members and pastors. That strengthened his faith during a time of declining health.
Donald is survived by his four sons and their wives; Donald and Betty Marteeny of Meadville, PA, John and Kathleen
Marteeny of Pittsburg, PA, Chris and Kathryn Marteeny of Bellville, and Richard and Donna Marteeny of Youngstown, OH. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and
He was predeceased by his wife, Grace Preston Marteeny, and his parents and siblings.
A memorial service will be held at Brenham Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 10 at 2 p.m. and led by Rev.
David Meriwether, Ph.D.
