MERLINE MARIE REMMERT MAYFIELD

   Funeral services for Merline Marie Mayfield, 71, of Bellville, were held Friday, May 28, 2010 at 10 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Jennie Jones and Rev. David Henske officiating. Interment followed at Pilgrimís Rest Cemetery in Bellville.  Serving as pallbearers were Bruce Remmert, Christian Remmert, John A. Remmert, Chris Vogler, Eric Haugen, Jeff Haugen and honorary pallbearer Lyle Palla. 

Merline was born in Bellville on Sept. 19, 1938 to parents John A. and Clara E.  (Stalbaum) Remmert. She was reared in Bellville and graduated from Bellville High School in 1956. 

She was a competitive athlete and was a member of the 1956 Bellville Brahmanette basketball team (#7) that competed in the state championship. Her 1956 team was later inducted into the Bellville Brahma Sports Hall of Fame.

She obtained her B.A. from Sam Houston State University and attained her M.S. in Education and post M.S. work from Prairie View A&M University.  Merline was a Professor at Blinn Jr. College from 1988-2006, teaching English composition and English literature.  

She was a member of St. Johnís Lutheran Church where she was involved in the church council and the social concerns committee. Merline was a very active member of the Bellville community serving in the German Society, Town and Country Garden Club, Bellville Historical Society, Bellville American Legion Auxiliary, and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Merline passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010 in Houston.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Clara Remmert; husband, Joseph M. Mayfield; sister, Florence Remmert and brothers, Donald Remmert and David Remmert. 

 

Merline is survived by her son, Joseph S. Mayfield and wife Staci; grandson, Grant Mayfield; sister, Ora Dell Remmert; brother, John A. Remmert and wife Ruby; special first cousin, Betty Krueger and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 520 N. Holland, Bellville, Texas 77418.
