EDITH MARIE BLAZEK SANFORD

Bellville Times

Edith Marie Sanford of Bellville Texas passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, February 18th ,2010 in the company of her family.

Edith was born on October 11, 1923 in Wallis, Texas to Ed and Lucy Blazek, the second of three children.  Her older sister, Leona Frank resides in Montgomery, Texas and her younger brother, Leroy (deceased) lived in Wallis, Texas.

Edie, as her friends called her, graduated from Wallis High School and attended Sam Houston State Teachers College for a year before World War II.  When the war began she moved to Houston where she met Paul Sanford through her roommate, Geneva, who was Paulís sister.  Paul and Edie became engaged while he was serving in the Navy in the South Pacific.  They married on April 19, 1945.  After Paulís discharge from the Navy the young couple lived for a time in San Francisco but soon moved back to Texas to be closer to family and start one of their own.  At this they were very successful.  Edie had six children, five boys and finally a girl.  She became a homemaker while Paul eventually built a business of his own.  Besides devoting herself to raising her growing brood Edie had but one true passion: cooking. At this she excelled, especially her baking.  Her cinnamon rolls, kolaches and cupcakes were well known and highly regarded by the many children throughout the suburban Houston neighborhood to which they had moved in 1958.

After raising their children Edie and Paul began thinking about the next phase of their lives. Her thoughts turned to her roots on the farm.  After a long search they bought property near Bellville in Austin county and built a home and ranch.  Named The Big C Ranch after a son who had died in a car accident in 1981, their new country home became their singular passion.  They also became active parishioners in the Catholic church in Bellville, Sts. Peter and Paul.  She and Paul were also members of the Bellville Historical Society, participating in the numerous events and trips sponsored by the group.

After treatment for cancer Edie suffered several years ago the couple finally decided that a move closer to town was necessary.  They reluctantly sold their beloved ranch and bought a home in the city of Bellville.  In 2005 Paul passed away after a brief illness.  The couple had, a few months before, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Not only will Edie will be missed by her children for whom she devoted her life but no less so by her 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren..

She is survived by five of her children: Mark Sanford of Redondo Beach, CA , Bill Sanford of Honolulu, HI, Dave Sanford of Walden, TX, Steve Sanford of Houston, TX and Paula Bible of Fayetteville, TX.  Christopher Sanford preceded her in death in 1981.

Visitation and rosary will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Bellville on Sunday, February 21 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  Services will be at the church on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 10am.  Burial will follow at Forest Park Westheimer in Houston.
