How the Alpine Avalanche Newspaper Got It's Name
By Verna Bonner

According to very early history and information presented by Berta Clark Lassiter, the Alpine Avalanche became the name of the town newspaper in Alpine in 1892 as the result of a fifty cent loan made by Alpine newcomer A. M. Turney to the new owner and editor of the Brewster Bell Newspaper. A young reporter from from the San Antonio Express, Jack Lee had just purchased the crude type and machinery and had not money left to purchase alcohol to clean the type. So, he borrowed the fifty cents he needed to buy the alcohol. Lee gave Mr. Turney the privilege of naming the newspaper. It was Turney who decided on the name of The Avalanche for the Alpine newspaper. Thus, it has been The Alpine Avalanche from that time to this.
