BIOGRAPHIES OF SOME EARLY BIG BEND AREA SETTLERS

Herschel Lothgrove Lackey

Herschel L. Lackey moved to Brewster County in 1883, according to his obituary. He was born February 2, 1842 in Memphis, Tennessee and moved to Goliad, Texas as a small boy with his parents-Robert and Martha E. Lackey. He married Anne Hord August 24, 1865 . This pioneer was a veteran of the War Between the States and his grave is marked with a CSA Medaillion placed by the Elm Grove Cemetery Association. He served in the Texas State Militia. His obituary in the Alpine Avalanche Newspaper dated August 13, 1914 stated that he died August 12, 1914. Listed in his obit as close relatives beside his widow are Mr. Robert Lackey and his children of Floresville, Texas and the families of Hord, Garnett, Taylor. His widow, Annie Hord, was born March 2, 1846 at Goliad, Texas and died March 4, 1923 in Alpine. Her father was Jessie Hord(1849-1930).


G. Kurt Lange

Born in Germany in 1888, came to Alpine in 1911 as a bootmaker. In 1911 he married Miss Anna Marie "Mamie" Weyerts and they became parents of three daughters. Mr. Lange made boots and repaired footgear in Alpine from 1911 until his retirement in 1959; his boots were known far and wide for their quality, comfort, and durability.

Mr. Lange was active in the Presbyterian Church, the Rotary Club, and a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge. He died in 1971 and his wfie in 1980.


Ricardo "Dick" Leyva

Worked on various ranches in the area until the early 1900's when he was employed the Alpine Mercantile Company. Mr. Leyva married Dionesia Cano in 1907 and in that same year established Dick Leyva's Transfer which hauled freight from the railroad to businesses in Alpine, to ranches, and to places as far away as the Terlinqua mercury district. As business prospered he bought a truck and is said to have been the first Mexican-American to own one. He operated this transfer business until his death in 1954.


Charles William Livingston

A native of Kentucky, arrived in Marfa in 1897 and engaged in the ranching business. After his marriage to Frances Farmer, he purchased a furniture store in Alpine and moved here in 1907. He also opened a funeral parlor which he and his can Charrles W. Livingston, Jr. operated for 60 years. For a brief period in 1917-he edited the Alpine Avalanche.


Confederate Vet Dies in Alpine
Alpine Avalanche Newspaper September 7, 1928

The burial of W. C. (Clay) Locke, a Confederate soldier, age 64 years, who died here Monday morning took place in the Alpine Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. R. F. Davis, pastor of the Methodist church of this place officiating.

Mr. Locke was born in Polk county, Tennessee, in 1844, and moved to Red River county Texas, in 1854. He enlisted in the State (Texas) Militia in 1863. He moved with his family to Coke county, Texas in 1888 and resided there until 1920 when he purchased the Locke Hotel here and moved to Alpine, where he lived until his death at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Verta Cook of this city. He had been in failing health for sevral years and his death was not unexpected.

All of his immediate family were present at the funeral services. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Matt Locke and Jas R. Locke of Alpine, and five daughters, Mesdames Verta Cook and Milt McClure, of Alpine; Mrs. S. A. Russell of Salida, Colorado; Mrs. M. V. Dannelley of Childress, Texas, and Mrs. M. L. Dannelly of Hurley, New Mexico. The pall bearers selected were W. B. Hamilton, E. E Towsend, Chas Trapp, R. S. Carnes, G. H. Yates, I. M Miller, and T. A. Beard. There were many beautiful floral offerings.


Felix L. Lowe

Felix L. Lowe was born in 1842 in Marion County, Mississippi and died November 15, 1927. He was a veteran of the War Between the States serving as a Private in Company F Tennessee Infantry. He lived for five months in the Texas Confederate Home in Austin in 1923.


Jim LaFarelle

Jim LaFarelle was born in England in 1857 and migrated to the U S in the early 1880's. He was involved in the development of quicksilver mining in southern Brewster County. He married Concha Garcia.


W. H. Lease

W. H. Lease was born August 7, 1868 and died April 22, 1925. He is buried in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine. A leader in political and civic affairs, W. H. was District-County Clerk from 1911 to 1925.


Edward Otto Lochausen

E O Lochausen owned and operated a large ranching operation near Marathon.
