Born in Presidio in 1886, worked as a young man on area ranches. He married Gillerian Viscanio in 1908, and they moved to Alpine in 1909. Mr. Uranga continued ranch work until 1918 when he opened the C. J. Uranga Grocery Store on AVenue G. This business operated until 1967.
Mr. Uranga was well known and widely respected in the area. He organized a cemetery association for the Hispanic community. He and his first wife were parents of eight sons, several of whom became prominent businessmen and entrepreneurs in other cities. The Uranga sons attended the Alpine public schools, and several attended Sul Ross. Two of their sons were among the earliest Hispanic youths to attend the Alpine High School.
Following the death of his first wife in 1929, Mr. Uranga married Ysidra Lopez, and they became parents of three daughters. Mr. Uranga died in Alpine in 1979 at the age of 92 years.
