Born in Mexico in 1886, came to Alpine in 1903 and worked on area ranches until learning the trade of stone and brck masonry. In 1919 he was one of the brick masons who helped construct the main building at Sul Ross Normal College. Mr. Valadez married Juanita Gallego in 1916, and they became parents of twelve children. In the 1920's he opened the Valadez Grocery and Market in south Alpine which he operated for many years.
Born in 1863 in Henderson, Texas, attended Sam Houston State Normal College where he received a teaching certificate after two years. He moved to Murphyville in 1885 to teach in the public schools. Mr. Van Sickle also studied law while teaching and was elected Brewster County Judge in 1888. In 1885, he married Miss Almo Hatley of Hallsville, Texas.
Judge Van Sickle was elected to the office of State Representative in 1900 and served two terms before returning to Alpine to practice law. He was active in the First Methodist Church and helped organize the first Sunday School. Mr. Van Sickle died in 1941 and his wife in 1944.
Born in 1869 in Bastrop, Texas, came to Alpine in 1905 where he bought the dealership for Studebaker wagons and a blacksmith shop. In 1906 he married Ricka Weyerts, widow of F. H. Weyerts. Mr. Vogt was a director of the Alpine Publishing Company which published the Alpine Avalanche. He also was active in various fraternal lodges in Alpine and the Lutheran Church. Mr Vogt died in 1915 and his wife in 1917.
L.T. Votaw came to Brewster County in 1911 and after working serveral jobs, became the Magnolia Petroleum Products dealer and he and his son , Frnak, purchased the Ford Dealership calling it Brewster County Motors. L. T. was born in Fayette County in 1875 and married Clara May Carnes, Sister of R. S. Carnes on November 1, 1901 at Wharton, Texas. They had two sons-Reginald D. and Frank L. Clara May was born in 1882 and died in 1963.
