BIOGRAPHIES OF SOME EARLY BIG BEND AREA SETTLERS

Robert Dowling Zumwalt

R. D. Zumwalt resided in Brewster County as early as 1911. He served in the Convederate forces during the War Between the States--as a Private in 136 Regiment Texas Cavalry, enlisting in Lockhart Texas. He was born in 1846 in Lavaca County, Texas and died August 16, 1926 in El Paso and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery.

He was married twice. His first wife died in 1919 and he married second Mrs. Elizabeth Sollie.

R. D. moved to El Paso in about 1916. He was invovled in the mercnatile business and was a salesman until a short time before his death. At his death, survivors were listed as his wife and four sons-Sam, Floyd N., Robert, and D. F. and three daughters-Mrs. J. J. Kent, Mrs. Carolyn Franks, Mrs. J. W. Gentry of Alpine.
