Funeral services for Elsie C. Balzer, 99, of Columbus and formerly of Ellinger, were held Friday, Feb. 14 [2003] at 2 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with burial in Brune Cemetery in Shaws Bend. The Rev. Msgr. Dan Scheel and the Rev. Dan Kahlich officiated.

Balzer died Feb. 12 [2003] in Gonzales Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital in Gonzales.

Born Aug. 16, 1903 in Live Oak Hill near Ellinger, she was the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Koehl) Scheel. She married Fritz Balzer Dec. 12, 1939. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus.

Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth Baumbach of Ellinger; niece, Bernice Kahlden and husband Allen of Columbus; great-nephew, Thomas Kahlden and wife Patty of Caldwell; great-niece, Patti Parks and husband Mark of New Ulm; great-great-nieces, Kolby Kahlden and Sarah Parks of Caldwell and New Ulm, respectively.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Monroe and John Scheel; niece, Elon Baumbach; and one nephew, Larry Baumbach.

Henneke Funeral Home of Columbus was in charge of arrangements.
