West News February 27, 2003 Funeral services were held 10:30 am Saturday at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Gerald, with the Rev. Gene Kotrla officiating. Military Graveside Rites followed at Gerald Cemetery, conducted by VFW Post #4819. The family received visitors from 4 to 6 pm on Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Banik was born on February 23, 1922 in West, the son of Ernest and Fena (Schronk) Banik. He attended schools in Ross and served his country as a medic in the United States Army during World War II. He married Dorothy Kunkel on December 30, 1944 in Waco. Mr. Banik was a farmer and worked for General Tire and Rubber Co. for 25 years before retiring in 1980. He then opened a small engine and lawn mower repair ship in Elm Mott. He was a member of the American Legion, SPJST Lodge #35 in Elk, and a longtime member, general handyman and deacon of St. Paul’s UCC in Gerald. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years. Dorothy Banik of Elm Mott; a brother, Albert Banik of West; two sisters, Olga Richter and her husband Helmut of Leroy and Erna Archerd and her husband Wayne of North Bend, Oregon; four sisters-in-law, Grace Lander of Lacy Lakeview, Helen Dulock of Leroy, Ruby Pavelka and her husband Charlie of Mart, and Elizabeth Kunkel of Elm Mott; eight nieces; 14 nephews; and several great nieces and great nephews. Pallbearers were Eddie Ray Banik, James Schuetz, John Schroeder, Steven Dulock, Gene Edward Pavelka and Lynn Brown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Church or Gerald Cemetery Association. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements. Posted by Janicka Vaculik
