Rites Held for Ed. J. Hajek

Ed. J. Hajek, of Shiner, age 71 years, four months and seven days, died in the Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital at 2:35 a.m. Thursday, November 24, 1966 on Thanksgiving Day.

Funeral services were held from the Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, Saturday, November 26 at 8:45 a.m. and continued at 9:00 a.m. with Requiem Mass in the Shiner Catholic Church. The Rev. John J. Hanacek officiated at the last rites and graveside services in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were his nephews, Don Bohuslav, A. R. Hagan, J. Jack Cloutier, Johnnie F. Hajek, Emil Pechacek and Buford Manning.

Rosary was recited at the funeral home Friday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Hajek was well known throughout the area as a meat market operator. He operated the Hajek Meat Market in Hallettsville about 12 years, having sold the business about five years ago.

Edward J. Hajek was born July 17, 1895 at Flatonia, Fayette County, Texas, son of John F. and Mary (Ficl) Hajek, natives respectively of Praha, Fayette County, Texas and Czechoslovakia.

The Hajek family moved near Shiner and established their home in the Mt. Olive community. He was married on April 28, 1937 to Miss Hertha Becker in the Sweet Home Catholic Church with the Rev. Father G. Kuratko officiating. During the most part of their married life together the couple resided in Shiner.

He was a member of the Catholic Church and the SPJST Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ed. Hajek of Shiner; four sisters, Mrs. Frank E. (Emma) Pechacek of Flatonia, Mrs. Adolph (Mary) Bohuslav, Mrs. Julius (Vlasta) Kutach, both of Hallettsville, Mrs. Oscar (Agnes) Manning of Houston.

His father preceded him in death on June 6, 1937 and his mother on March 21, 1955; and two brothers, Emil died May 4, 1953 and Ernest F. Hajek died January 24, 1964.

To the bereaved, sympathy is extended in their sorrow. May he rest in peace.

Note: The 'F' in Ernest F. Hajek is crossed out on my copy and a 'J' written beside it.
