Victoria Advocate on line Saturday March 24, 2001 Gene J. Hajek, 72, of Victoria, died Thursday, March 22, 2001. He was born October 8, 1928, in Shiner, Texas to the late Emil and Lillie Ermis Hajek, one of three sons, survived by Johnnie F. Hajek of Austin and Emil Hajek, Jr. of Hallettsville. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Our Lady of Victory Cathedral. He enlisted in the U.S. Army September 13, 1946, took basic training, was shipped to Japan and assigned to the 187th Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Japan Glider Badge, Rifle MKM 137 and Parachutist Medal. Survivors: Wife, Evelyn Werner Hajek; son, Gene James Hajek, Jr. of Reno, Nevada; daughter, Peggy Hajek Thompson, her husband, Richard Thompson, both of Victoria and their two sons, Ryan Thompson, a University of Texas Graduate Student, of Austin and Todd Thompson, a Junior high school student at St. Joseph Academy of Victoria. Services will be held Sunday, March 25, 2001, 2 p.m. at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner, Texas.A rosary will be recited Saturday, March 24th at 7 p.m. at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel in Shiner.Graveside services will be held at the Shiner Catholic Cemetery with full military honors.
