Wharton Journal-Spectator 3 May 2003 Mr. Edwin Alois Hanzelka Sr., age 90, of Rosenberg, and a former longtime resident of Hungerford, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born on Sept. 29, 1912, in Smithville, the son of the late Joseph Hanzelka and Emilie Polasek Hanzelka. Mr. Hanzelka had been a resident of Hungerford for many years until moving to Rosenberg in 1994. He married Mary Antonio Haas on Oct. 20, 1941, in Weimar, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 1986. Three brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death. Mr. Hanzelka was a farmer and worked for J.D. Hudgins, Inc. until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Hungerford. Mr. Hanzelka was also a member of the SPJST and the KJT. He was an avid Astros fan. He loved to garden, play dominoes and work word-find puzzle books. He also loved playing his accordion. Friends may call for visitation after 4 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2003, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Dick Laxton of Rosenberg and Catherine and Richard Harris of Wharton; son and daughter-in-law, Edwin and Shirley Hanzelka Jr. of Rosenberg; sister-in-law, Frances Hanzelka of East Bernard; grandchildren, Kevin Harris, Diana Prihoda, Dana Ezell, Dawn Meynier, Robert Meynier Jr., Amanda Hanzelka and Cristy Hanzelka; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Kevin Harris, Kenny Prihoda, James Ezell, Robert Meynier Jr., Eric Palacios and Kevin Wolff. Honorary Pallbearers are all of his great-grandchildren.
