BOHDAN KALLUS

Flatonia Argus
August 4, 1938
Abstract of Obituary.

Noted throughout the state of Texas as one of the outstanding figures among Texas Czechs, Mr. Bohdan Kallus, long-time resident of Flatonia, passed away at his home here early Saturday morning [July 30].

Infirmities of advanced age had kept him in bed for a long period. He was 83 years of age.

Funeral services were held from the Sacred Heart Church here Monday morning, August 1, at 8:20 o'clock. Rev. John Anders of Praha officiated assisted by Msgr. L. P. Netardus of Shiner, life-long friend of the deceased, who brought a tribute to the deceased in Czech.

Other priests present included Rev. A. Morkovsky, Rev. Vaclav Bily and Rev. Janda. Following Requiem High Mass, the funeral cortege moved to the Hostyn Catholic cemetery near La Grange, where interment was made, following mass by Rev. P. P. Kaspar. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers.

Mr. Kallus was born in Frenstat, Moravia, Czechoslovakia, on April 14, 1855, immigrating to Texas when he was 25 years of age and settling near Hostyn. Later he moved to Rutersville, and thence to Flatonia in 1926. He was married to Miss Anna Drapala in 1882, and ten children were born to them. One son, F. C. Kallus of La Grange, preceded his father in death in 1935.

He is survived by his wife, six sons, Richard and Robert of Hostyn, A. C. and Phillip of Rutersville, Louis of Luling, and Joe of Flatonia, three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Anna) Muras of Flatonia, Mrs. C. M. (Bessie) Janda of Hostyn, and Sister Mary Rose (Adella) of Victoria; three brothers, F. J. of La Grange, A. J. of Wied, and Prof. Phillip Kallus of Frenstat; one sister, Mrs. Mary Knesek of Frenstat; 59 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. There is also a host of other relatives and friends who join in mourning his passing.

Mr. Kallus was very active among the Czech Catholic organizations of the state. He was a man of small stature with a full beard that easily identified him wherever he went. He was a charter member of the KJT lodge, serving as supreme secretary for 13 years. He also held four offices in the RVOS Farmer's Mutual Protective Association of Texas, having served as director, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. For 20 years he served the Catholic Workmen of Texas as president.

Before serving in the army in the country of his birth, Mr. Kallus pursued the vocation of pipe-organ maker, but upon his release from the military service, he moved to the United States, where he worked for the S. P. Railroad on the bridge gang and later took up farming and carpenter work.

Myriads of beautiful flowers and a crowd that filled the church to overflowing were mute testimonials to the high respect in which the deceased was held. Mr. Kallus will be sorely missed, and his vacant place will be hard to fill.
