Shiner -- Valesta Karolina Karl, 98, of Shiner, died Sunday, July 16, 2000. She was born Aug. 18, 1901, in Shiner, to the late John H. and Anna Mikulencak Elsik Sr.

She was a registered nurse at Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi and Huth Memorial Hospital in Yoakum. She was a Catholic.

Survivors: nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: husband, Nick Karl; parents; eight sisters and brothers.

A rosary will be recited 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Buffington Funeral Home chapel. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. Jerry Caponi officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Yoakum.
