Graveside services for Clifton R New, 74, of Columbus were held Thurs Aug 17 at 2 pm at the Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery in Columbus. Wallace New and B J Sparks officiated. Mr New died in Monument Hill Nursing Center in La Grange Aug 14. A 50 year resident of Columbus, he was born June 21, 1926, in Speaks, the son of Floyd and Maggie (Brown) New. He married Leona Richter May 27, 1952. She preceded him in death on Aug 29, 1996. A retired welder, he was employed by Pioneer/Lone Star Gravel Mining. He served his country during World War II in the US Army. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Jean and David Dahman of Bryan; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl Ray and Barbara New of Katy, Clifton Leon and Lauralyn New of Columbus and David Gene New of New York; two sisters, Alberta Sparks of Old Ocean and Mary Olive Starry of Bay City; two brothers, Elmer New of Brovesbeck and Wallace New of Kerrville; 5 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Maggie New; wife, Leona Richter New; and brothers, Cecil, Earl, and Chester New. Henneke Funeral Home Ltd of Columbus was in charge of arrangements.
