West News March 13, 2003 Alfred J. “Freddie” Pavlas, age 77, of West, passed away Saturday morning, March 8, 2003 at his residence. Graveside services were held 10 am Tuesday at St. Mary’s Cemetery with Rev. Ed Karasek officiating. Military Rites followed conducted by VFW Post #4819. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Pavlas was born July 19, 1925 in Abbott, the son of Anton and Lillian (Hodanek) Pavlas. He attended schools in Abbott and West before entering the United States Army in 1943. He served during World War II before being discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1946. After returning he married Bonnie Southward on April 21, 1948 in Hillsboro. Freddie worked at several places including West Food Mart, before retiring in 2002. He was a member of SPJST Lodge #54, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4819, American Legion #478 and RVOS. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Pavlas of West; a son Freddie Pavlas and his wife Donna of Waco; four sisters, Edna Sharp and husband Robert “Red” of Waco, Maxine Bonge and husband Herb, Dorothy Zahirniak and husband Joe, and Esther Vrana and husband Edwin, all of West; triplet grandchildren, Garrett, Parker, and Ashlynn; his dog, Bandit; and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Ronnie Bonge, Gary Vrana, Edward “Zork” Zahirniak, Bill Zahirniak, Willie Helona, Norman Payne, Burl Shelton and Herbert Brem. Memorials may be made to the West Senior Ministries Program, West Ambulance Association or St. Mary’s Parish Center. Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of the arrangements.
