Funeral Held For Hunting Shot Victim

Alpine - Funeral services for James Pechacek, 26, a former San Antonian who died Friday in a hunting accident, were held Saturday at Geeslin Funeral Home here.

The body will be transferred to Esenberger Funeral Home in Boerne, where a Requiem Mass will be offered Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Boerne.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bernadine Pechacek; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Pechacek of Boerne and two brothers, both of Boerne.

Pechacek, a 1962 graduate of Brackenridge High School, was a former outfielder in the Los Angeles Dodger farm system. He was a student at Sul Ross College in Alpine at the time of his death.

Justice of the Peace Hallie Stillwell ruled the shooting a hunting accident.

Boerne Man Fatally Shot Near Alpine

Alpine - James Emmett Pechacek of Boerne, 27, a Sul Ross senior, was killed in a hunting accident on the ranch leased by Roy McBride 10 miles east of Alpine Friday about 4:30 p.m.

Friends with him were Charles A. Taylor, also of Boerne, Gary Gardner, San Antonio.

Pechacek was in the passenger seat of a pickup truck driven by Taylor. Gardner was riding in the back of the pickup. They hit a ditch, causing Gardner to lose his balance. His rifle discharged, with the bullet hitting Pechacek in the back.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

Justice of the Peace Hallie Stillwell ruled the shooting accidental death. Alpine Police Chief Bill Hardeway investigated.

Pechacek is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bernadine Pechacek, a City of Alpine employe, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Pechacek, Boerne.
