Shiner Gazette 26 Feb 1976 Death Claims 92-Year-Old Anton Schmidt Yorktown - After a long and industrious career, Anton Schmidt, 73, retired farmer and stockman of the Gruenau community, passed away Sunday, Feb. 15, 1976 at 3:45 p.m. in the Yorktown Memorial Hospital. A prayer service was held Monday at 8 p.m. in the chapel of the Lamprecht Funeral Home in Yorktown. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Leroy Deans, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial was in Westside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Joachim and George Jr. Schmidt, August and Roland Riedesel, Edgar Brandt and George Morisse, nephews of the deceased. Born July 27, 1883 in Germany, one of eight children of the late John and Gesine (Bruns) Schmidt, he came to America in 1890 when he was seven years old, with his parents. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Ganado in 1906. He was united in marriage with Sophie Morisse Oct. 26, 1910 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. Morisse, of Nordheim on her birthday by the Rev. J.K. Poch. The couple lived in the Gruenau community, where they were engaged in farming and ranching until 1967, when they retired and moved to Yorktown. Four children were born to them. Mr. Schmidt was the oldest charter member of the Gruenau Hermann Sons Lodge and also a charter member of the Gruenau T.&S. Verein. For many years he served as trustee of the former Friedland School. His wife died Jan. 12, 1973, after which he lived for a year with his daughter at Nordheim, and for the past two years was a resident of the Yorktown Nursing home. Surviving are a son, John B. Schmidt of Yorktown, two daughters, Mrs. Kermit (Burgunda) Ladner of Kenedy, Mrs. T.L. (Hella) Magee of Nordheim; a brother, George Schmidt of Nordheim; a sister, Mrs. Paul (Annie) Warnut of Beasley; 13 grandchildren and 30 great- grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Tony Schmidt, Aug. 7,
1973; a brother, John Schmidt; and four sisters, Mrs. Chas. (Gesine) Riedesel,
Mrs. Herman (Mary) Riedesel, Mrs. Willie (Lydia) Meinke and Mrs. Emil (Helen)
