Shiner Gazette 23 Jul 1981 Flatonia - Herman A. Schutz, 92, lifetime resident of the Flatonia area, passed away July 7, 1981, after an illness of several weeks. Rosary was recited by Rev. Anthony Matula at the Smith Funeral Home in Flatonia Thurs., July 8. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus presented Mrs. Schutz with a gold chalice in memory of her husband. The chalice will be presented to a Catholic Church of her choice. On Friday, July 9, 1981, at 2:0 (sic) p.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the funeral Mass was concelebrated by Rev. Joseph Hamala, Rev. Benton Thurmond, and Rev. Marcus Valenta, with members of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus serving as honor guard. Interment was in the Flatonia Catholic Cemetery with military honors by members of the American Legion Post No. 94. Active pallbearers were Charles Schutz, Thomas Schutz, Mark Schutz, Bill Shelton, Doel Garcia, grandsons, and Thomas Scates, nephew. Honorary pallbearers were W.W. Mueller, Arnold Weideman, Charles Wehmeyer and Frank Pechacek. Mr. Schutz was born on October 19, 1888, near Flatonia, son of Adam and Elizabeth (Helfert) Schutz. On November 22, 1920, he was married to Lillie Olle. To this union three children were born. At the age of 18, Herman Schutz entered the Civil Service as a rural letter carrier and served for 52 years, which included 17 months of World War I Army service in the Motor Transport Corps. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1958 at the age of 70. He was an active member of the Sacred Heart Church and received the Archbishop Furey Award in 1970 in recognition of his service to the Church. He was a charter member of American Legion Post No. 94, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and Fayette Country Rural Letter Carrier's Association. He was also a member of the Texas Pecan Grower's Association and Flatonia Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillie Schutz of Flatonia; two sons, James
of Arlington, and Joe Schutz of New Orleans, Louisiana, and a daughter, Dorothy
Shelton, of Germantown, Tennessee; seventeen grandchildren and five
