Mary Hatch Denham

Mary Hatch Denham, 87, of Port Lavaca, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003.

She was born Sept. 20, 1915 in Bloomington. She was one of two children born to Edgar Alvin and Mary Ranolph Hatch. Mary graduated from high school in Port Lavaca in 1933, then worked for Fergusons and City Drug Store. In May, 1935, Mary married Roy Elton Shafer who lived less than a month after that. She continued working until her marriage to the late James “Jimmy” I. Denham. Mary served as secretary for the Chamber of Commerce from May 1953 until September 1956 when she was employed as secretary of First United Methodist Church where she remained until retirement in September 1977.

Mary is a direct descendant of Captain Sylvanus Hatch, born in 1788, who was an adjutant under General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. Sylvanus Hatch came to Texas with the Austin Colony in 1828 on the ship “Mary” of Nova Iberia, which he built. In 1829 he brought his family and about 50 passengers to what is now known as Calhoun County, landing first at Indian Point and continuing up Matagorda and Lavaca Bays. He was one of the first two commissioners to serve Calhoun County when it was created in 1846.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Mary was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tammy Prejean.

Survivors include her daughter Frankie Comiskey of Port Lavaca, son David Denham of Rockport/Port Lavaca, sister Gwen H. Regan of Port Lavaca; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Laura Adams officiating. Burial followed in the Port Lavaca Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Ben Comiskey, Jr., Ernie Richardson, David Todd Denham, James Bruce Denham, Ed Regan, and Robert Michael Regan.

Memorials made be made to the 1st United Methodist Church on north San Antonio, Port Lavaca, Texas 77979 or the donor’s choice.

Jose Moreno

Jose Moreno, 78, of Weedhaven, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003.

He was born Oct. 1, 1924 in El Paso, the son of the late Florentino Moreno and Felicitas Romo-Moreno. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Andres Moreno and Antonio Moreno.

Survivors include his wife, Adela Rodriguez Moreno of Weedhaven; a daughter, Mary M. Garcia of Olivia; three sisters, Maria Refugia “Cuca” Medina of McAllen, Juana Maria Maruca Rodriguez and Berta Moreno of El Paso; three brothers, Enrique Moreno and Pedro Moreno, both of El Paso and Ignacio Moreno of Los Angeles, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Juanita G. Duran of Palacios, Eulalio Garcia Jr. of Upton, Ky., David Garcia of Durham, N. C. Victoria Reyes of Beeville, Martha Garcia and Teresa Vinyard of Bay City, Michael Garcia and Victor Garcia of Victoria, Carlos Garcia of Beeville and Krystal Garcia of Olivia; 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, Michaela Proctor, Hannah Viets, Toti Proctor and Elizabeth Viets; and a best friend of many years, Tony Atkinson.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Artero Memorial Chapels of Port Lavaca, 552-2300.

Blanca Margarita Moreno

Blanca Margarita Moreno, 54, Port Lavaca, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.

She was born Jan. 2, 1949 in Brownsville, the daughter of Estevan Tamayo Sr. and Maria Luisa Sosa Torres of Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico. She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Socorro Tamayo.

Survivors in addition to her parents, include her husband, Manuel Moreno of Port Lavaca; five daughters, Elizabeth Lynett Moreno of Port Lavaca, Dolores Margarita Moreno of Corpus Christi, Aricela Shaw of Houston, Sandra Moreno of Port Lavaca and Rosie Berryman of Arkansas; four sons, Pedro Moreno Jr. and Victor Manuel Moreno of Miami, Fla. and Rene Moreno and Juan Moreno of Port Lavaca; four sisters, Marina Tamayo of Port Isabel and Fidela Rodriguez, Gloria Sosa and Hortencia Sosa of Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico; eight brothers, Armando Tamayo of Port Isabel, Javier Tamayo of Brownsville, Mario Tamayo and Estevan Tamayo Jr. of Port Isabel, Martimiano Sosa, Manuel Sosa, Jesus Sosa and Jose Angel Sosa of Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico; and one grandchild, Blanca Nicole Munoz.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church.

Pallbearers were Pedro Moreno, Juan Moreno, Jose Angel Sosa Torres, Jesus Sosa Torres, Rene Moreno and Pablo Barron
.
