The 1854 and 1855 school census records were copied from the original records by Gifford White in 1979. I have scanned the index page of his book so people will know which records are available in this source. I do not have the source and can not provide look ups. The counties and a bit more info can be found at the following web page. http://three-legged-willie.org/texas.htm For those of you who live in or near Cass County or can visit...the Cass County Courthouse has the old county school records. I'm not sure of the years covered. For now they are still available to view at the Courthouse. I say this because some counties have given these records to local societies, thrown them away or in some instances given them to individuals. I've spoken with the Cass County Clerk's Office about these records and they say they have no intentions of getting rid of them. Officials change and new ideas with them so one can never know what the new folks will do. Hopefully, we won't loose them. Recently, I used these records to prove my father's age for the social security administration. They were more than happy to take them over the delayed birth record since the school records were done closer to his date of birth. However, they did indicate that we had to get certified copies from the courthouse for them to use that record. I stress this because if those records had been given away or moved at any point we could not have used them for this purpose. -- Dana If you can identify any of the schools or children in these photos we'd love to hear from you.
