Notes for EDWARD F. LOTZ:
From a Kansas newspaper or book article from
Freeman Publishing Co. (date 191?) of Salina, Saline Co., KS:
A concern to which we wish to call
attention is that of Edward Lotz, located at 110-12 North Fifth Street.
This business became established thirty-one years ago (NOTE: about 1878), and
has since been conducted along lines that insure a steady increase in patronage
and popularity. Mr. Lotz has built up a large trade
and enjoys a meritorius reputation as well as a
prosperous business. Hard and soft coal for heating and power purposes is on
hand; hay straw, feed and grain of all kind is also
handled. From twelve to fifteen courteous assistants are employed to attend
promptly to the wants of the trade. From five to eight wagons are kept busy
delivering the goods to all parts of the city. Mr. Lotz
is also the proprietor of the Western Seed House, located at 120-122 North Fifth Street. This
establishment is one of the largest catalogue seed houses in this part of the
country and sells seed in Kansas, Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and all
parts of the West. It has been established twenty-five years and has built up an
immense trade. This establishment sells at wholesale and retail and issues a
fine large catalogue. Mr. H. C. Elliott is in direct supervision of this
business. Mr. Lotz was born in Germany and received his education
in that country previous to entering these branches of business,
he was employed as a cabinet maker. He was the first cabinet-maker here and is
the oldest coal dealer. He is an honored and popular member of the Masons and others.
Lotz, Edward May 1, 1867 First undertaker. First coal dealer in Saline Co., KS. Owned Western Seed
House and Lotz Coal Co.

The Story of Salina: Other furniture men had advertised as
being in the undertaking business prior to this time: Edward Lotz & Co (1869); Lotz & Hollard (1871); Radcliffe Bros.
& Hall (1872) to be specific. However, the Bergs were the first to
advertise as "Practical Undertakers", and continued in this
profession while the others moved into other trades.

2. FREDERICK
WILLIAM2 LOTZ (EDWARD F.1) was born 1862 in
KS, and died 1918 in Chambers Co., TX. He married TASSIE STEWARD WILLCOX
January 11, 1904 in Chambers Co., TX, daughter of ALBERT WILLCOX and
GEORGIAN/GEORGIANA CHAPMAN. She was born October 09, 1879 in TX, and died March
06, 1965 in Harris Co., TX.
Notes for FREDERICK WILLIAM LOTZ:
In Chambers Co., TX 1900 living as a
boarder in the house of Lizzie Wilson (he was age 32)
In TX in 1910 per census (he was age
42)
Fort Anahuac was the scene of
incidents in 1832 and 1835 that preceded the Texas
Revolution qv (see also ANAHUAC
DISTURBANCES). Although the town flourished briefly prior to the 1832 battle,
the population declined dramatically afterward. A long-running civil dispute
between Gen. Thomas Jefferson Chambers and Charles Willcox
qqv over ownership of the townsite
began in 1838 and was not fully resolved until after the assassination of
Chambers in 1865.
An article written by Kevin Ladd
about the Kansas
connection to Chambers Co., TX:
Another businessman to settle here by
way of Kansas
was a young fellow by the name of Frederick William Lotz,
who arrived soon after the turn of the century. Although his parents were
immigrants from Germany,
Fred Lotz took easily to life in Saline County
(Kansas) and
came here with a good head for business and a little extra capital to start
with. In October 1909, Lotz joined in with H. H.
Jackson and other stockholders to organize an ice plant company at Anahuac. The group quickly entered into a contract with a
Pennsylvania
company and built the town's first ice plant near the wharf area, with the
entrance to the plant fronting on Main
Street. Two years later, Lotz,
along with his partner, George Willcox, opened the Anahuac Saw and Planing Mill, a
small but profitable mill operation that began in June 1911 with fifteen
employees. Lotz also took on several major
construction projects of a public works nature. The largest of these was a
wooden bulkhead across Turtle
Bay. The $125,000
bulkhead, authorized by voters in 1912, took a couple of years to build. Lotz had barely completed the job before it was destroyed by
the 1915 hurricane. The storm also wrecked his sawmill and personal property.
The Progress reported: "The heaviest individual loser at Anahuac
is F. W. Lotz, estimated at $10,000. In the
warehouse, which floated away like an ark, were his automobile, some household
furniture and lumber." Lotz eventually rebuilt
his sawmill and in 1917 won the contract to build a new bulkhead across the
bay. He was drowned in early 1918, only days after the project got underway.
Fred Lotz was married in 1904 to Miss Tassie Willcox, a daughter of
Albert G. V and Georgia Ann (Chapman) Willcox.
