As this was my first time doing this type of thing, I needed lots of help. I looked around on the net and bought a few books to help me on this project. I am providing this page as a thank you to all of the sources that helped me. I have also provided this for others who are taking over as coordinator of a TXGenWeb or USGenWeb project site. This is not the only way that a web site can be built, there are lots of programs that will do all the hard work for you, all that you have to do is place the information in the right areas and the program will do the rest. I choose to do all the hard work of entering all the labels and tags of the HTML language. Along the way, I have picked up some other things like; forms, tables, JavaScript, and Java. Thank you for visiting my site. Enjoy!
There are a lot of books out there that will help you build a web site. Before you rush out and spend your hard earned cash, do some research to see what book will be the easiest for you to understand. The next thing to be considered is how you want to build your site. Do you want a program to do all the formatting for you, you just enter in all the information. These programs will format and add all the required tags, they will add JavaScript, Java, CSS(Cascading Style Sheets), CGI Forms, and Tables to your site to make the site more interactive with the viewer. Or, do you want to do like I am doing, entering and adding tags to the text to make it HTML(Hypertext Markup Language). After you decide these things, take a look at the selection of computer books in your local bookstore. Look through the table of contents, read the introduction page, and look at some of the examples in the book. These three things will usually let me know if the the book is going to be helpful to me. I then suggest that you see if you can save a little money and look for a sale somewhere. Try Amazon.com, and Half.com to see if you can find sale priced new or discounted used copies of the book that you decide on. The books that I used in the building of my site are listed below.
HTML 4-For The World Wide Web
Forth Edition
Elizabeth Castro
Peachpit Press
This book is great for the beginner. Peachpit has used what they call a "Visual Quickstart" for this book. This approach uses pictures rather that lengthy explanations to get their point across to the reader. I found it very easy understand, and to perform what the book asked of me. The book has only 383 pages(including index) and cost me $19.99 at a local bookstore. The book can also be ordered from the Peachpit Press Web Site(I have provided a link), and from Amazon.com. Check both sites, sometimes Amazon has sales going.
JavaScript-For The World Wide Web
Forth Edition
Tom Negrino & Dori Smith
Peachpit Press
This book is the same format and presentation as the above book. I found it very easy understand, and to perform what the book asked of me. The book has only 430 pages(including index) and cost me $15.99 on sale at a local Barnes & Noble. The book can also be ordered from the Peachpit Press Web Site(I have provided a link), and from Amazon.com.
HTML 4 for DUMMIES-Quick Reference
2nd Edition
Deborah S. Ray & Eric J. Ray
DUMMIES.com
This book is purely a reference tool, there is not a lot of the lengthy explanations and humorous bits of info that you will find in the "Dummies" series. I found it very easy understand, and to perform what the book asked of me. The book has only 224 pages(including index) and cost me $9.99 on sale at a local Staples Store. The book can also be ordered from the DUMMIES Press Web Site(I have provided a link), and from Amazon.com.
I have been using AceHTML 4 Freeware program from Visicom Media. I found this program while searching c/net.com's Web Authoring downloads page, I was searching for HTML Editor programs. I downloaded the program from there. In preparing this page for upload to the web, I went back the c/net.com and the program is no longer listed in there downloads. I then went to the manufacture's site and it is no longer available there either. Visicom has 2 versions of this program, AceHTML 4 and AceHTML 5, unfortunately both are priced over $30.00. I also downloaded their ftp tool,AceFTP 2, this product is wonderful and easy to use. The price tag on this program is $30.00, but as far as I am concerned, well worth the money. All of these programs are shareware, and you will have 30 days trial period in which to try them out and see if you like them. I really like both of these programs, and will probably continue to use for a long time to come. If you would like to find something a little cheaper or different for whatever reason, use the above c/net.com link, and look there tell you find what you like better. While you're there, take a look around, there is a lot more shareware and freeware to download.
