Services for Herschel Bird, 79, of Lorenzo were held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Lorenzo First Baptist Church with the Rev. Glynn McCalman officiating. Burial followed in the Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Lorenzo.
Herschel passed away Monday, April 3, 2006 at the Ralls Nursing Home. He was born March 8, 1927 in Bradley, Arkansas to the late John and Gertrude (McCalman) Bird. On July 3, 1956 he married Miriam Waldorf in Lubbock, Texas.
He worked as a farmer for 18 years, car salesman for 10 years, and served as Crosby County Commissioner for 16 years retiring in 1996.Herschel enjoyed playing dominoes and golf with all his friends. His favorite time was spent going on the many camping trips around the country with his grandchildren and his favorite dog Missy. He especially enjoyed going to all the sporting events in which his grandchildren were participating. He was a member of the Lorenzo First Baptist Church, a past member of the Lorenzo Housing Authority, past president of the Lorenzo Lions Club, officer of the Lorenzo JayCees, former president of the board of Pleasant Hill Gin. He served on the Regional Solid Waste Advisory Committee, South Plains Association of Governments, and was a member of County Officials Political Action and former member of the West Texas and State Judges and Commissioners Associations. Herschel was a US Army veteran of WWII.
He is preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include; his wife; Miriam of Lorenzo, a son and his wife; Kevin and Lisa Bird of Poquoson, VA, a daughter, Eunice Bird of Lorenzo, five grandchildren; Tiffany Bird, Steffany and husband Toby Wildbrett, Lance and wife Leslie Stark, Heath Stark and Nicole Bird and close friends; Jim and Jackie Norris of Lorenzo, Walt and Reba Norris of Lorenzo, and Pat and Joan Yoakum of Cone, and one great grandson.
Serving as pallbearers were; Gerald Beshirs, Walt Norris, Jim Norris, K. Don Spurgin, Coy Biggs and Dee Reynolds. Honorary bearers will be Walter Brown, Ray Parker, Jerry Swetnam and Dick Van Hoose, Lance Stark and Heath Stark and Kevin Rainwater
