Ella McNeil Benton

Biography

Ella McNeil was born in Dallas County, Texas September 21, 1865. Her father fought in the Texas War of Independence. She was married to J. C. Murphy and moved to Estacado in 1887, where the first county seat of Crosby County was located and as Quaker Colony was the first settlement. They soon moved to Emma, where Murphy was an early day Sheriff. Their children, Ernest, Rena, Albert, Lee, Mattie Bea and Jack, were reared there. They moved to Hereford for a few years, where her husband passed away in 1916.

The Murphy home in the early day was always open to cowboys who stopped for a meal. They often spent the night. In recalling old times with friends, she remembered one night when they had 20 cowboys sleeping on pallets.

In September 1920 Ella Murphy was married to D. H. Benton. They lived in Ralls in the same home until Mr. Benton passed away in March, 1936. She continued to live in Ralls until her death October 24, 1949.

Grandmother Benton, as she was affectionately called by all, was indeed a grandmother to the numerous "Benton" grandchildren and a friend to many young men and women who boarded at the Benton home in Ralls at different times. She was an excellent cook and everyone knew a meal at her house would be the best. (Anna Benton)
