
Services for Janey Carothers, 69, of Afton were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2002 at First Baptist Church in Afton with the Rev. C.L. Atkinson officiating. Burial was in Afton Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home of Spur.
She died Friday, April 5, 2002 in Lubbock.
Mrs. Carothers was born Sept. 21, 1932, in Afton to James and Ila Mae Alexander Brown. She married Alvin Carothers on June 24, 1948, in Roaring Springs.
She worked as an admissions clerk at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock for many years before returning to Afton. She also was a foster parent for 20 years. She wrote the Afton news column for the Texas Spur Newspaper for many years and was a member of the Afton PTO. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Afton.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Scott Carothers of Rochester; two foster sons, Jose Chapa of Lubbock and Feliciano Chapa of the home; one daughter, Becky Shuler of Lubbock; her mother, Ila Brown of Spur; six grandchildren; and three grandchildren.

Alvin Carothers, 79, of Spur and formerly of Afton died Saturday, July 28, 2007. Services were held Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at Dickens Baptist Church with Reverends C.L. Atkinson and Harold Abney officiating. Burial was in Afton Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.
Alvin was born December 21, 1927 in Duncan Flat to Bill and Myrtle Sedgwick Carothers. He attended Patton Springs Schools and later married Janey Brown in 1948 in Roaring Springs. She preceded him in death in 2002. He was a WWII, US Army veteran. Alvin was a member of Dickens County Senior Citizens, Lubbock VFW and First Baptist Church in Afton. He retired from the Texas Highway Dept. after 20 years of service. He and Janey served as foster parents for over 30 years, and had 47 children go through their home.
Alvin is also preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Joe Carothers and Leeroy Carothers; one sister, Betty Jean Carothers and his parents.
He is survived by two sons, Scott Carothers and wife Tiffanie of Borger and Feliciano Carothers of Afton; one daughter, Becky Carothers Shuler and husband Gene of Sweetwater; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
