Services for Victor Arrington will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Spur with the Rev. Rory Mosley and the Rev. Larry Burton officiating and with Mr. Charlie Morris assisting. Burial will be in the Dickens Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home of Spur. Mr. Arrington died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004. Victor Arrington was born May 9, 1919 to Roy and Billie Shugart Arrington in the Red Hill community near Spur.
He graduated from Spur High School in 1938. Afterwards, he attended college at ENMU. Mr. Arrington married Helen Hotchco Nov. 15, 1944 in Spur. He spent his entire life farming and ranching in Dickens and Kent Counties. In 1956, he was voted "Farmer of the Year". Victor was an active figure in the Duck Creek Soil and Water Conservation District. He was chairman of the Duck Creek SWCD for over 20 years. He oversaw the Duck Creek Flood Control program and was a vital part of making Duck Creek a leader in soil and wat er conservation throughout the state of Texas.
Mr. Arrington served on the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation's 100 man committee. He retired from the Soil Conservation Board in 1998, serving a total of 42 years. In 2004, Mr. Arrington received a 50-year award from the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Arrington also served on the Spur School Board, the Dickens County Veterans Land Board and the Motley/Dickens Old Settler's Board. He was also a veteran of WWII, serving on Guadalcanal and other Pacific islands.
Mr. Arrington was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charlie Arrington; a sister, Ida Lee McInroe; and a nephew, Jimmy Don McInroe. He is survived by his wife of Spur; three daughters, Polli Arrington of Dickens, Toni Green and husband Randy of Hobbs, N.M., and Vicki Sawyers of Dickens; a sister, Pat Sudderth and husband Bob of Arlington; two granddaughters, Derenda Adams of Anson and Lisa Lindblad and husband Randy of Dickens; three great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters .
