Biography

George Washington Allen was born 1867 in Georgia to John Andrew Allen who was a Confederate Army Veteran. They lived in Pike County Georgia until 1874 when they decided to move to Texas. John Andrew sold all his possessions except a wagon and two mules. This wagon was to be their home on the long trip to Texas. They bought land in Cherokee County near Troup, Texas. His children grew up there and he lived there the rest of his life. George Washington Allen was a young man of 23 when he arrived in Panola Co., Texas in 1879. He was fresh from Georgia and spoke with a beautiful southern accent that he kept as long as he lived. George soon met pretty, 16 year old Beulah Mae Crawford and it was love at first sight! He said, "That´s the girl I´m going to marry." she said "Yes" and they tied the knot in 1890.

They lived at Troupe until 1907 and eight children were born to them. In 1907 they moved to Jones County and rented a farm near the present town of Stamford. They farmed there until 1911, by that time they had nine children. The journey to Spur by covered wagon took three days. Their household goods and livestock were shipped by railroad box cars. They moved to the Bud Wooten place in the Wake Community near the Crosby-Dickens County line as a blue norther rolled in. They lived there one year and had another son, Doug.

In 1914 they moved to the Gollihar farm south of McAdoo in Dickens county. Aline and Woody were born there. About 1916 George and Beulah bought their own farm south of Highway 82 from W.C. Hudson and they lived there until the early 30´s. In 1917 George and Beulah moved for the last time to the Clark Eldredge place west of McAdoo.and lived there the rest of their life. George died in 1963.

There were now 12 children. During their school years on the Plains they attended school at Wake, Leatherwood, Crazy Flat and McAdoo. All graduated from high school.

George and Beulah became known as Grannie and Pa to one and all. They were faithful Christians and Grannie was quite a Bible scholar. Grannie was quick to help any sick neighbor and was even a mid-wife on several occasions.

By this time Maggie, Verna, Grace and Lois were married and beginning families of their own, so the boys helped their mother with the chores. John helped on washday, Charlie had a butter route in Spur, and all helped milk several cows and work in the fields.

On Sunday afternoon their house was a fathering place for all the Allen families and friends. All loved Grannie´s "Pa Puddin" and pone bread.

Pa was a charter member and director of the McAdoo Coop Gin. Before that gin was built, Pa took his cotton all the way to Spur or Floydada and a light in the window directed him home late at night.

Pa and Grannie observed their 50th wedding anniversary plus several more. Grannie died in 1948 and Pa in 1963 at the ripe old age of 96 years.

Grannie and Pa did not leave a lot of worldly possessions but they left a rich heritage of Christian beliefs and conduct for their posterity to emulate.
